The tickets were not at the gift shop, but at a window slightly down the same street as the mint enterance. There was a sign posted on the street that said tickets. The tickets went on sale earlier than the first tour of the day, so we purchased tickets for the first tour and then came back for the tour. (There's not much open around there early in the morning). It was not busy on the day we went. There was no line for tickets and our tour group was not full.
I understand getting in line early as the tix window opens at 7am. Do I get to select my tour time? Or are tix dispersed sequentially starting with the earliest tour time and so on?
