So - we stayed across the street at the White Sands Villas (VRBO I believe). Great place. The first day at this beach was awful. The surf was intense, sporadic and pounding. We found out later on th…Full review by COTraveller33

Amazing sandy beach with plenty of room for laying out, lifeguards who really watch out. There was a warning and they kept announcing to be careful. I was worried after reading some reviews, but just…Full review by 706elizabethv

The best thing about this beach is its location in Kailua-Kona close to lots of lodging, food, and activities. The water tends to be very rough here, and the beach is very small so it gets crowded e…Full review by kristyg624

We were just there. I was disappointed. We took a hop on/ hop off bus that took you to about 7 different stops. White sands beach was one. The bus was $20 pp ( we are a family if 4). There was no white sand there at all. The sand was black and the beach was covered in rocks. We didnt bring water shoes, we were expecting a nice beach. Lots of little crabs hide in the rocks. My kids were too nervous to even go in the water. Yes, they had washrooms, but very dirty. I was not impressed. Waste of $80.
How busy would I expect White Sand beach or Kona to be in mid May? I am not wanting to go to Hawaii during the peak busy times and it seems May may be a fairly good time. Please advise, thanks!

I went to White Sands Beach during the first week of April, and it wasn't crowded at all, mostly a few adults on the beach and a handful of what looked like local kids in the water. We stayed next door for a week at the Kona Magic Sands Resort, and had a view of the beach throughout the day. We noticed it got busier in the mid-afternoon, but not crowded. There is another nice state beach and park 1/2 block to the north, just on the other side of our hotel, so between the two, people were pretty spread out.
