Bob Kierlin, the founder of Fastenal, has died at 85. Kierlin served as Fastenal’s CEO from 1968 to 2002 and was on its board of directors until 2014. Kierlin, a Winona Cotter graduate, also represented Winona as a state senator from 1999 until 2006.

Former Minnesota State Senator and Fastenal founder Bob Kierlin died at the age of 85 on Monday. Kierlin was born in Winona and attended the University of Minnesota.  In 1967, Kierlin founded Fastenal in Winona which is where the headquarters are still located to this day.

Kierlin died Monday in Winona, according to his obituary. A former Minnesota state senator, he was best known for founding Winona-based hardware manufacturer Fastenal Company in 1967. It would go on to become a Fortune 500 company after going public in 1987.
