Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is "almost certainly off the table" in trade talks, according to MLB insider Jeff Passan.

The 22-year-old infielder made his big-league debut May 24 when the Red Sox placed All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman on the injured list with a quad strain. When Bregman returned two weeks ago, the Red Sox opted to keep Mayer up and option fellow infielder David Hamilton, who was recalled Friday to take the roster spot.

Alex Bregman was the big offseason signing that raised the ceiling for the Red Sox, but he had to miss a good chunk of the season due to an injury. He is back now, and he is feeling good about the direction that the team is headed.
