Russia was once in the exclusive club of major economies but was kicked out following its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Russia attacked multiple cities across Ukraine with 440 drones and 32 missiles, while President Donald Trump avoided committing to any new sanctions at the G-7 summit.

Officials said a ballistic missile hit a nine-storey apartment building in one district, with a total of 27 districts of the city coming under fire. The strikes lasted more than nine hours – sending Kyiv residents fleeing to underground shelters from before midnight until after sunrise.

"We extend deepest condolences to the victims' families. This senseless attack runs counter to President Trump's call to stop the killing and end the war," the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine said in a statement.
