Jewish students and a professor said the university had allowed a hostile protest. After the settlement was announced, the Department of Justice separately said it had found the university violated civil rights laws.

The admission increases come as the the University of California faces rising financial pressures from federal research funding cuts and proposed state budget cuts.

UCLA will pay $6.13 million, including damages to each of the plaintiffs and $2.33 million to eight organizations that support the Jewish community.
