In an El Paso courthouse not far from where a gunman killed 23 people at a Walmart in a 2019 attack targeting Hispanic shoppers, victims’ family members and survivors got their last chance to address him face-to-face in court this week.

A day after the shooter pleaded guilty to killing 23 people and wounding 22 others, Yolanda Tinajero gave the judge an unusual request.

The Rodriguez family carried a large photo portrait of Javier when they gave their victim impact statements to the Walmart shooter. It’s the portrait that hangs in their living room and is displayed for birthdays and family occasions for a son and brother who is dearly missed.
