The man who killed TCU student Wes Smith in a 2023 random shooting pleaded guilty and was sentenced to prison. Smith’s parents spoke in court, sharing their grief and describing their son’s lasting impact.

Matthew Purdy told Fort Worth police that he shot Wes Smith, who was a stranger to him, in the head to "make sure he was dead."

The victim's parents said their son had a heart for helping others and believed the tragedy could have been avoided.
