Alexander the Great became king of Macedonia, the ancient Greek realm, around age 20 and subsequently expanded his empire to parts of modern-day Greece and the Middle East, according to Biography.com.

Until now, researchers thought that the city was built long after Alexander the Great's death, during the reign of Philip V (221 to 179 B.C.).
