CDC researchers examined the cases of 15 adults in Arizona and New Mexico who were hospitalized after drinking hand sanitizer containing methanol.

The CDC reported that during its study they found that a total of 70,669 hand sanitizer-related illnesses were reported, with 92 percent involving alcohol-laden products.

It was not immediately clear if any of the people who were poisoned drank the hand sanitizer for its disinfectant properties. The CDC said some adults had consumed it for its alcohol content.

The CDC is not sure why people might drink hand sanitizer. Children might do it by mistake, and some people may think it’s a good substitute for alcoholic drinks. It is not.
