A veteran Chicago fire captain died from injuries fighting a garage fire and collapse on the city's West Side Wednesday morning.

Captain David Meyer had been with the Fire Department since 1996, serving mostly in busy fire houses on the West Side "doing what he loved," officials said.

"He was a loyal member doing his job. It's a dangerous job," a Chicago Fire Department official said of Meyer, 54, a veteran firefighter who died after a garage fire on the West Side.
