China on Wednesday raised tariffs on imports from the U.S. to 84%, the country's latest response in an escalating trade war with President Trump whose 104% tariff on Chinese goods also went into effect on Wednesday.

China imported more than $1 billion each of cotton, sorghum, beef, pork and seafood from the US last year, according to the government data. In particular, US soybean farmers will lose out on a huge market. China imported nearly $13 billion worth of US soybeans last year, according to the USDA.

Beijing, which imports far fewer goods from the U.S. than it exports, is considering a range of nontariff measures amid growing trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies.
