Kelvin Roston Jr. wrote and stars in “Twisted Melodies,” a compassionate examination of 1970s soul singer/composer Donny Hathaway, running through Aug. 10 at Northlight Theatre.

With songs, riffs and reminiscences, “Twisted Melodies” captures Hathaway’s formidable musical prowess. The script needs tightening.

Roston is still obsessed with Hathaway, bringing his solo show, dubbed “Twisted Melodies,” to the Northlight Theatre in Skokie a decade after Congo Square, following other stagings.
