Elm seed bugs are native to Europe and the Mediterranean and were first documented stateside in Idaho in 2012. In 2017, the species was discovered in Colorado in Mesa, Delta and Montrose counties.

They feed on seeds from trees like elm, linden, and oak. When aggravated or touched, the bugs can give off a foul odor sometimes described as smelling like bitter almonds.

This is where the elm seed bug comes in. By feasting on the seeds, the bugs slow the elm trees' spread, Formby said. "So one invasive species may help control another invasive species," he said.

Elm seed bugs (arocatus melanocephalus) are relatively new to Idaho. They first established in 2009 near Boise but have since been found throughout the state wherever elm trees grow.
