Sixty years after the Grateful Dead first formed in San Francisco, the spirit of the legendary jam band is alive and well in the city where it all began.

Dead & Company, featuring original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, will play Golden Gate Park’s Polo Field this weekend with an estimated 60,000 attendees each day. The last time the band played that part of the park was in 1991 — a free show following the death of concert promoter and longtime Deadhead Bill Graham.

W hen Dead & Company announced the site for the celebration of the Grateful Dead's 60th anniversary, fans were delighted. Golden Gate Park played a defining role in the Dead's history, hosting performances that ranged from impromptu concerts to full-scale events.
