Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins issued a new memo on Monday, aimed at reversing “heavy-handed federal policies and [increasing] domestic timber production to protect our national and economic security.

Whether or not logging would solve the wildfire problem is contentious. Many U.S. forests are considered to be at high wildfire risk, due to climate change and almost a century of wildfire suppression policies that have resulted in overgrown, fire-prone land. Neither are mentioned in the memorandum.

Around 59% of all national forests in the U.S. would be open for logging, including some in eastern Washington.
