Hurricane Erin battered North Carolina’s Outer Banks with strong winds and waves that flooded part of the main highway, damaged a waterside motel and swirled under beachfront homes as the monster-sized storm slowly began to move away from the East Coast on Thursday.

The conditions in Virginia Beach have not been affected too much by Hurricane Erin. People were still out at Chic’s Beach to look at the large waves, including one surfer who told 10 On Your Side he went to Hampton earlier and argued the waves were stronger in Virginia Beach.

On Wednesday at 1:46 p.m. the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory valid from Thursday 5 p.m. until Friday 2 p.m. for Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties.

Earlier this week, more than a dozen Jersey Shore beaches issued swimming bans as forecasters warned of life-threatening conditions for boaters and swimmers. Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency across all of New Jersey on Thursday.

Tropical storm conditions were in effect over parts of the Outer Banks and the coast of Virginia, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Strong winds that passed through Hot Springs and Garland County shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday caused damage in several areas, with trees falling on some residences and several businesses being hit.
