Analyzing a leg bone from a fossil site in Colombia, scientists have identified a massive “terror bird” that lived about 12 million years ago.

The suspected new species was slightly taller than a terror bird from what’s now Brazil called Paraphysornis brasiliensis, which stood nearly 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall.

A fossil fragment indicates that the ancient predator was 20% more massive.

They likely lived spread out, as opposed to their more populous prey, which could help explain why they haven't been found in Colombia before, the researchers said.
