A federal judge has blocked a plan to slash reimbursement funds the National Institutes of Health provides to public universities and research centers throughout the country, a plan both the University of Washington and Washington State University say would have far-reaching effects on their research programs and likely result in layoffs.

Missouri universities and research organizations will need to cut about $100 million from administrative costs for research funded last year by the National Institutes of Health or replace the money from other sources if President Donald Trump’s attempt to reduce indirect costs is successful.

Grants from the National Institutes of Health come with additional money for overhead. A planned $4 billion cut would leave colleges with large budget gaps.
