China’s Premier Li Qiang called for urgent global consensus on artificial intelligence safety and governance, announcing a new international cooperation body.

China said on Saturday it wanted to create an organisation to foster global cooperation on artificial intelligence, positioning itself as an alternative to the U.S. as the two vie for influence over the transformative technology.

The Chinese government has proposed the establishment of a world AI governance cooperation organization as part of its efforts to bolster open, inclusive and equitable artificial intelligence development and governance globally.
