Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were both shot multiple times early Saturday morning in an assassination attempt. Sen. Hoffman and Yvette were both injured, but survived, as Yvette dove on her daughter to shield her from the gunshots.
Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded in politically motivated shootings early Saturday, Gov. Tim Walz said. Authorities have also identified a suspect who is still at large.
It allegedly took months of planning, but the suspect in deadly attacks on Minnesota lawmakers unfolded over a roughly 90-minute time span.
Prosecutors say Vance Boelter was wearing a "hyperrealistic silicone mask" to disguise his identity when he approached.
Early Saturday morning, Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were assassinated in their home.
Matt Oleg, Hoffman's nephew, spoke with KARE 11 's A.J. Lagoe, telling the journalist that their family was "told that a bullet just very nearly missed Senator Hoffman's heart, that his wife Yvette is in better condition, she had no organs pierced, and that she saved the couple's daughter's life."
Authorities asked for the public’s help in finding Vance Boelter. A nephew said John and Yvette Hoffman were both in stable condition as they recover from surgery.
