WASHINGTON ― The Senate on Monday passed a bill that would require the detention of migrants accused of theft and violent crimes, as well as grant power to states to challenge federal immigration policies ― a big win for newly sworn-in president Donald Trump.

In a 64-35 vote, the Senate passed an immigration bill that mandates the detention of undocumented individuals accused of theft or burglary. The measure is now headed to the House, where it is expected to pass, probably becoming the first piece of legislation President Donald Trump signs into law.

Deporting millions of migrants or enforcing the Laken Riley Act will largely depend on Congress' ability to allocate roughly $100 billion.

The GOP-led bill, which received some Democratic support, will now head back to the House for approval before it goes to Trump for a signature.

If passed, it would require the Department of Homeland Security to detain immigrants without legal status accused of theft, burglary, and other crimes.
