A federal judge on Tuesday blocked enforcement of a new Defense Department policy barring transgender people from serving in the U.S. military.U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes granted a request for a preliminary injunction sought by transgender active-duty service members and transgender people who are in the process of enlisting.

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes said the policy is “soaked in animus” and discriminates against transgender people.

The Trump administration said on Monday that it had determined Maine educational authorities were in violation of federal law prohibiting sex discrimination by allowing transgender girls to participate in school sports.

The federal Office of Civil Rights on Monday said the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals Association, which regulates school sports, and Greely High School in Cumberland have 10 days to change their policies or the issue will be handed over to the Department of Justice.
