The Russian Defence Ministry said Sunday that it repelled Ukrainian attacks overnight amid a unilateral Easter truce declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Ukraine accused Russia of violating the ceasefire.

Dozens of Ukrainians gathered at a bombed-out church in the country’s north to celebrate Easter Sunday, doubting a ceasefire with Russia is possible.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said that he had ordered his forces to “stop all military activity” from Saturday evening through Sunday. Ukraine’s leader said Putin was trying to “play with people’s lives.
