Financial services provider United Services Automobile Association sued competitor Regions Bank in Texas federal court on Tuesday for allegedly violating its patent rights in mobile check-deposit technology.

United Services Automobile Association is suing Birmingham-based Regions Financial Corp., with USAA saying that Regions used its patented check deposit technology without permission for its own gain. The suit, filed Tuesday in eastern Texas in U.S. District Court, seeks damages, penalties and costs.

The complaint furthers USAA’s long history of court battles with banks such as Wells Fargo and PNC over patent disputes. Truist and Discover more recently signed licensing agreements to resolve rifts.

USAA claims to have developed the mobile capture deposit technology and has already successfully sued Discover and Truist, among others.

This isn’t the first time the national financial institution, headquartered in San Antonio’s Med Center, has pursued legal action over its remote deposit capture technology.
