US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will discuss the possibility of deporting suspected Tren de Aragua gang members to El Salvador in an upcoming meeting with Salvadorean president Nayib Bukele, according to State Department Special Envoy for Latin America Mauricio Claver-Carone.

It comes after a harsh crackdown on the country’s gangs by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele. Bukele suspended key constitutional rights in 2022 and arrested 84,000 people, more than 1% of the country’s population. The majority of them remain in prison without being sentenced.

The Trump administration began sending deportees on US military planes back to Guatemala and El Salvador, according to people familiar with the matter, as it looks to demonstrate that it’s acting on campaign promises to return millions of migrants to their home countries.

The arrangement, known as a "Safe Third Country" agreement, would empower U.S. immigration officials to deport non-Salvadoran migrants to El Salvador.
