At some point during the confrontation, Castillo reportedly drove his car into one of the police vehicles, to which police allegedly responded by shooting into Castillo's car and injuring him.

Santa Cruz police are investigating a vehicle versus pedestrian crash that occurred Monday night. The crash was reported at the intersection of Highway 1 and River Street at around 8:30 p.m.
