The £71 million Seacole Building was named after Mary Seacole, the celebrated Jamaican-born nurse renowned for her support for British soldiers during the Crimean War.
Ms Seacole was refused as a volunteer nurse, and travelled to the Crimea at her own expense. Once there she set up her hotel near Balaclava, initially building it from driftwood and scrap metal.
