Earthquakes’ sudden, rapid shaking can cause fires, tsunamis, landslides or avalanches. They can happen anywhere, but they’re most common in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Puerto Rico and Washington, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

A preliminary XX magnitude earthquake struck XXXXX, according to the United States Geological Survey.  The quake, which struck at XX, was centered XX.  Further information was not immediately available.

A 3.4-magnitude earthquake rattled the Northern California area, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The 4-mile deep quake hit about 5 miles northeast of San Martin in the Santa Clara Valley at 12:35 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, according to the USGS. More than 150 people as far away as San Mateo and Gilroy reported feeling the tremor to the agency.
