A coin can be worth a ton of money -- a pretty penny, one might say -- if it's rare and has enough historical significance.

The U.S. Mint also produced a series of bicentennial quarters to commemorate the event — and many of those now command great sums of money as the country approaches its 250 th birthday.

Proponents of eliminating the coin have cited cost savings on their production and speedier checkouts at cash registers.

Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, the U.S. Mint is now contemplating quarter dollar designs related to youth sports for 2027 through 2030.
