Pope Francis, a reformer who rattled the Catholic Church's conservatives and inspired some progressives, has died.

Francis, who emerged from his convalescence on Easter Sunday to bless the thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, died on Monday morning, the Vatican announced.

The pontiff, who made history as the first pope from Latin America, suffered a string of health challenges earlier this year that landed him in the hospital for more than a month.
