SpaceX has made design changes to the Starship launch system for its eighth flight test in response to the spectacular breakup of the upper stage during its most recent test, which it believes was caused by a harmonic response that stressed the onboard hardware, leading to a fire and loss of the vehicle.

SpaceX plans to launch its Starship megarocket on its next test flight on Monday. The vehicle’s upper stage exploded over the Atlantic Ocean during the last such test.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday it cleared the SpaceX Starship vehicle to return to flight operations while an investigation into the January 16 Starship Flight 7 mishap remains open.

Federal regulators have closed an investigation into what went wrong when a SpaceX Starship spacecraft — part of the most powerful launch system ever constructed — exploded during a January test flight.

The test flight will be a repeat of what SpaceX hoped to achieve on the previous Starship launch in January, when the rocket broke apart and showered debris over the Atlantic Ocean and Turks and Caicos Islands.
