At the age of 64, he became King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover following the death of his brother George IV on June 26, 1830.

As recently as May 2022, most respondents to a YouGov poll in the U.K. preferred to see William leapfrog Charles to take the throne. William might be more popular, but that doesn’t make him a king.
