Framed copies of the Ten Commandments will become fixtures in every public school classroom in Montana should a bill proposed by a Republican senator from Lindsay become law.

The Ten Commandments Monument is seen at the Texas Capitol in Austin. A Texas Senate panel on Tuesday advanced a bill Tuesday that would require schools to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

The plaintiffs argue the mandate violates the First Amendment’s protections for religious freedom and the separation of church and state.

A dozen bills specify, for example, that the Ten Commandments displays must be hung in a “conspicuous” location. Another 11 specify they should be at least 11-by-14 inches in size.
