The death of a Rhode Island teen at a Milford quarry on Sunday highlights the serious danger these illegal swimming holes pose – and how difficult it is for authorities to police them.

The former Milford Mill Swim Club sold at auction on Thursday for $775,000 to a man who plans to build a mosque on the 19-acre site but keep the rest of the property as is.

“ Others liked the history of the quarry. “There is a lot of background here very nostalgic,” said Greg Maus, 42, as he swam at Milford Mill earlier in the week.

The quarry at Milford Mill is one of them. Dark and mysterious, complete with ropes and a zip line to swing yourself in on, it’s certainly rustic and it’s definitely for experienced swimmers only.
