York police are giving away steering wheel locks to owners of Hyundais and Kias. The city received about 120 locks from Hyundai after a rash of car thefts in the city involving specific models.

The car company has sent out 23,000 steering wheel locks to police across the country to distribute in an effort to stop a rise in the thefts of some models of its vehicles.

York police say steering wheel locks they're giving away are helping reduce car thefts. Police have given away close to 200 locks after a rash of thefts involving certain Kia and Hyundai models.

Anyone with information about the car theft is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH. MPD has promoting steering wheel locks as a way to combat car thefts.

Free steering wheel locks are available to Durham residents at the Durham Police Headquarters at 602 East Main Street. The locks are available 24/7, 7 days a week.
