A Qatari official has told Newsweek that the country at the center of the recently established ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement will support President Donald Trump in pushing both sides to adhere to the truce.

U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visited Gaza as the tenuous Israel-Hamas ceasefire holds. Witcoff is believed to be the first U.S. official to visit Gaza in at least 15 years.

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani visited Damascus on Thursday, the first visit by a head of state to the Syrian capital since the Dec. 8 fall of President Bashar al-Assad to an Islamist rebel offensive.
