FIFA is looking at a surprise proposal from South American soccer to expand the men’s 2030 World Cup to 64 teams.

Soccer’s governing body will look into another expansion of its marquee event, the most lucrative in sports, after a request by one of its 2030 co-hosts.

World Cup will be unique, with matches taking place across six different countries for the first time: Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay in South America, and Spain, Portugal, and Morocco in Europe and Africa.

Soccer's governing body will review a proposal to expand the World Cup to 64 teams to mark the centenary of the sport's marquee event.

If FIFA were to adopt the proposal for temporary expansion, the men's World Cup would double in size from 2022 to 2030.

“A proposal to analyze a 64-team FIFA World Cup to celebrate the centenary of the FIFA World Cup in 2030 was spontaneously raised by a FIFA Council member in the ‘miscellaneous’ agenda item near the end of the FIFA Council meeting held on March 5, 2025,” a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters.
