Xcel Energy is rolling out a sweeping plan to expand power generation in Texas and New Mexico, aiming to add more than 5,000 megawatts of new capacity by 2030 to meet fast-rising electricity demand.

The new project will add 5,168 megawatts of capacity to the New Mexico-Texas area. Xcel will use a mix of dispatchable energy and storage, along with wind and solar facilities.

The community solar program has grown dramatically since its 2014 launch, meaning Xcel Energy now pays subscribers hundreds of millions of dollars in credits annually.
