This is the existential dilemma confronting the Ukrainian leader as he travels to Washington for talks with the US president on Monday. Fresh off a summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin that bypassed a ceasefire, Trump has left Zelenskiy little room to maneuver.

During their talks, President Zelensky and Trump expressed hope that Monday's White House sit-down could lead to trilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end Russia's war on Ukraine.

Inside the Oval Office, Zelensky and Trump showed few signs of their once-frayed relationship. They talked positively about a U.S. role in security guarantees for Ukraine — one of the most complex issues under discussion — to ensure that Russia does not restart the war after they agree to a peace deal.
