The US Supreme Court accepted a major new church-state showdown, agreeing to consider whether states with public charter schools are constitutionally required to approve and fund religious institutions as part of the program.

The Supreme Court will weigh the fate of an Oklahoma religious charter school that has blurred the lines between church and state, justices announced Friday in an unsigned order distributed days after President Donald Trump was sworn into office.

Conservatives hope the case would continue a streak of rulings in recent years permitting taxpayer funds to be used for religious purposes.
