Two top Federal Reserve officials could dissent from the central bank’s likely decision Wednesday to hold its key interest rate steady, a sign of division reflecting the economy's muddy outlook as well as the jockeying to replace Chair Jerome Powell when his term ends next year.

The Fed is maintaining its benchmark interest rate in the range of 4.25% to 4.5%, where it's been parked since December.

Trump has threatened to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell, challenging the Fed's independence. Experts say he's not the first president to target the central bank, but he's the most public and aggressive.
