School vouchers are moving closer to being a done deal with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pushing for lawmakers in the Texas Senate to approve the Texas House's plan to allocate taxpayer dollars to pay for private and parochial schooling.

AUSTIN — Texas’ $1 billion school voucherlike plan that would allow families to spend public money on private schooling appears to be on the fast track to the governor’s desk. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick wants the Senate to accept the latest version of the school choice proposal that would create education savings accounts in the state.

Choice laws have now passed in every major Republican state. Congress and President Trump are now aiming at blue states that have resisted vouchers for decades.
