By Guy Faulconbridge MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian officials and lawmakers on Thursday poured scorn on French President Emmanuel Macron for saying that Russia threatened Europe, and cautioned that such talk could lead the West towards the abyss of a new world war.

French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized Russia’s threat to Europe in an address to his country on Wednesday night. President Donald Trump’s recent rebuke of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has concerned European leaders and led them to coalesce around Ukraine and offer support.

European countries have intensified talks on sending peacekeepers to Ukraine to monitor and enforce a possible ceasefire. There is no unity among European countries on the issue, with some of them openly opposing the idea.

US President Donald Trump has long said he would negotiate a quick end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. In pursuit of a deal, the US has engaged with the Kremlin while pressuring Kyiv to support the peace initiative.
