The Ohio Department of Health’s mission is advancing the health and well-being of all Ohioans by transforming the state’s public health system through unique partnerships and funding streams; addressing the community conditions and inequities that lead to disparities in health outcomes; and implementing data-driven, evidence-based solutions.

The Department of Health operates Ohio’s public health system and strives to eliminate health disparities. It works to control the spread of infectious diseases, prepares and responds to public health threats, builds strong communities, provides access to health care, monitors the environment, regulates health care providers, and more.

Bruce T. Vanderhoff, M.D., MBA, was appointed director of the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) in August 2021. Dr. Vanderhoff joined the agency after being named chief medical officer in November 2020 and is a key leader in planning, managing, and executing Ohio’s COVID-19 response, including its wide-reaching vaccination program.
