1975 silver penny - Coin Talk
Feb 12, 2008 · I have come across a 1975 silver penny given to me as change as a dime. It wouldn't work in a vending machine and when I took a closer look I seen it said one cent. The date is 1975 with a D below it. It seems to be in fair condition for a penny over 30 years old. It is a very shiny silver.

Aug 18, 2010 · If it's in a box of dimes, there is a decent chance it's a 1988-D penny struck on a dime planchet. Post some pics and you should also weigh the coin to see if the weight matches that of a post-1982 penny or matches that of a post-1964 dime.

Of course once in a blue moon a penny could be minted on a pre 1964 silver dime planchet, or a foreign planchet, but that is rare, and will always be smaller

Jun 23, 2013 · The penny will take on a coating of zinc that can be shined up and really look silvery. If you carefully heat this cent up, the zinc coating will alloy with the copper and make a "gold" cent that has a coating of brass. Weigh the cent, a dime blank or a blank made of silver will have a different weight than a cent blank which is copper coated zinc.

If you post a focused, cropped pic, there are enough experienced members on here that can determine if it has potential (don't get your hopes up), or just one of the numerous plated/damaged coins.
